Artist Comment/Statement:

She has severe pain with her back being "out-of-whack" - the doctors say she needs two back surgeries.  She has eye problems - glaucoma.  Her sweetheart 19-year-old cat has died.  Some days there were just too many demands on her time, and she just doesn't have a lot of energy.  But - if you look closely enough, there is still a hint of a smile and a twinkle in her eyes.

This piece and the piece "Me and Myself" are companion wall hangings.

Techniques:
Pieced and free-motion quilted by machine.  The face, hair, and lace collar were raw edge fused and then machine embroidered.  The buttons were stitched by machine and the "eyes" were glued on. The black-and-white checks were hand-painted using fabric/textile paint.

Materials:  Fabrics used were Batiks, hand-dyed fabric by Lunn, and commercial cottons.  Rayon, cotton and monofilament/nylon threads were used for the free-motion machine quilting and machine embroidery.  Polyester batting was used.  Embellishments of lace, buttons, rick-rack, and craft eyes.  Fabric/textile paint was also used.

Awards & Recognition: The Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University used the image of "Myself and I" for the cover of their bulletin used for the Community Quilting Service in Marquand Chapel on Thursday, October 7, 2004.
