Artist Comment/Statement:

The International nautical code flag of solid yellow represents the letter of the alphabet "Q".  It also represents the international nautical signal of "My vessel is healthy and I request free pratique."

"Pratique" (pra-tek) Clearance given an incoming ship by the health authority of a port

Techniques:
The background (sky and water) was pieced by machine. The water was embellished with couched threads.  The boat and sails were pieced and fused to the background.  The masts, sail numbers, and flags were glued and stitched.  Quilting was done by machine free-motion quilting.

Materials:  Fabrics used were moire, suede, commercial cottons, and Skydyes hand-painted cotton.  Batting used was Hobbs Thermore polyester batting.  Machine applique, couching and quilting were done using Sulky rayon thread, Isacord polyester thread, acrylic/metallic knitting yarn, ribbon, hand-dyed 3-ply pima cotton thread, and monofilament nylon/invisible threads.  Fabric paint was also used on the hull of the boat.
