Artist Comment/Statement: Much
like my life at the time I started this piece, the design started
out as something entirely different, and it just wasn't going to happen
the way that I had planned it.
There were supposed to be colorful tropical birds in a tree. The birds
flew away, the tree disappeared, and all that remained were all the beautiful
wonderful tropical colors.
Techniques: The
background was machine pieced and quilted. Hand embellishments
of glass beads, chenille thread, and embroidery were added to the top
surface. The
black-and-white checks were hand-painted with fabric paint.
Materials: Fabrics used were
Batiks and commercial cottons. Cotton and monofilament, nylon threads
were used for the machine piecing and quilting. Glass beads,
chenille thread, and hand-dyed variegated colored cotton threads were
used for surface embellishments. Polyester batting was used. Fabric
paint was used to create the black-and-white checked fabric.
