"Crazy Love" ©2001
Art Quilt by Studio Artist Dottie Gantt

Artist Comment/Statement:  At first glance this may look like a broken heart, but it isn't.  After 30+ years of marriage, it seems to me that relationships are like receiving a 1000 piece puzzle in a box with no directions.  You have no picture of the puzzle, and you don't know if all of the pieces are in the box.  Periodically you take a piece out of the box, to put the puzzle pieces together.  The challenge is that you don't know what the end result will be.  Each day of your relationship together, you have the fun of trying to figure out where the pieces go.  Not all of the pieces of my "Crazy Heart" puzzle are put together yet.  I don't know if the picture will ever be complete, but I do know that it is a "heart".  So far my husband and I have had a lot of fun putting our puzzle together.  We still have a lot of pieces to add together.

Techniques:  Pieced and free-motion quilted by machine.  The embellishment of glass beads was added by hand.  The piecing of the heart is based on techniques by Keiko Goke in her book "Quilt Wonderland" and by Gwen Marston in her book "Liberated Quiltmaking".  After piecing the heart fabric together, and free hand cutting it, it was fused to the black-and-white checked fabric.  Machine embroidery was added to the edges of the puzzle pieces before the free-motion quilting.

Materials:  Fabrics used were commercial cottons and hand-dyed cottons.  Rayon, cotton and monofilament/nylon threads were used for the machine embroidery, free-motion machine quilting, and machine piecing.  The embellishment of glass beads was added by hand.  Polyester batting was used.
